When their paper weavings were complete, students's fine motor skills were put to the test as they learned to weave with yarn. Students designed popsicle sticks which were assembled into miniature easels to display their artwork.
First grade students used contrasting colors for their paper weaving. They learned the tabby weave (over, under pattern). Students double-checked the pattern repeated horizontally and vertically.
After the weaving was complete, students brainstormed ideas for foods they would like to bring with them if they were going on a picnic. Students turned their weaving into a picnic blanket, and made a collage of drawings of food (and other items) on top. First grade students looked at artwork by Paul Klee and discussed how he used the elements of art in his paintings. After looking at Paul Klee's painting, Cat and Bird, students looked at pictures of real cats and brainstormed how they could be drawn using different shapes.

Collaborative Drawings - Students took turns in their group drawing the features of a portrait until the portrait was complete. It was a lot of fun seeing how they turned out!
