Second grade students are painting sunflowers inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's sunflower paintings. Skills they are practicing are color mixing, starting with the background (painting back to front) and using a variety of brush sizes/brush strokes depending on what subject matter they are painting.

2nd grade students answered to three clay coil challenges a) rolling the longest clay coil, b) making the tallest clay pot using coils, and c) making the pot with the most creative clay coils... more photos to come!
2nd graders are discussing the role of the architect - a kind of artist who designs buildings. Students experienced a virtual tour of Warwick castle in England, and were asked to brainstorm the purpose of castles, and different features of these buildings which help to protect the people inside. Now, students are designing their own castles using black paint to outline and soft pastels.
2nd grade students have been learning about the mandala tradition practiced by Tibetan monks, and learning to create designs showing radial symmetry. In the Tibetan tradition, the colors symbolize key virtues: blue=healing, white=knowledge, red=life force, green=balance, and yellow=wisdom.
2nd grade students are learning about Henri Rousseau and his famous painting, "Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised)." They are learning techniques to control transparency of paint, color mixing, and brush control.

Collaborative Portraits - students had fun getting to know each other while taking turns drawing the features of a portrait until the portrait was complete
