4th grade students learned about mask traditions from different time periods and from around the globe and discussed the variety of purposes human beings have had for making masks.
After creating a design/template for their mask idea, students set about building their mask features with everyday found materials like newspaper, tape, cardboard and Styrofoam. The 3-D features will be covered first with a skin of masking tape, and then 2 layers of papier-mache and finally painted. My teacher example is based on the children's book character Babar :). Does artwork have to be beautiful? Can it be ugly? How about both at the same time? These mugs were inspired by the American face jug tradition. The tradition was started by African slaves who placed homemade ceramic jugs with ugly faces on the graves of the deceased to ward off evil spirits, the uglier the better. The tradition spread and the vessels are prized by collectors to this day.
4th graders are creating clay mugs with unique features using a variety of clay techniques. Their mugs will come out of the kiln and be ready to glaze next week. 4th graders are making paintings based on a continuous line drawing of a face using contrasting colors.
Students were introduced to art class by reading the book, Art Is, by Bob Raczka.
Please check back often to see updates on the out of this world things fourth graders are doing!
