3rd grade students made observations about the cherry blossom trees that have been blooming all over Cheongna. Then they were introduced to a similar tree, the plum blossom tree, that is a subject in Chinese painting. Since this tree blooms in winter, it represents a person who shows strong character in difficult circumstances. Students took turns giving examples of people they know who do just that!
Then, the fun part: students use a straw to blow ink to create the branches of a plum blossom tree and painted the flowers. Painting this way, with less control, for some was scary at first, but fun! The directions the ink takes are unexpected and beautiful: Owls are nocturnal predators that hunt their prey using sharp talons and their keen sense of sight. 3rd graders used light outlines on a dark background to create contrast in their drawings. 3rd graders were challenged to show overlapping and a variety of textures in their drawing.
Students were introduced to the still life genre. Students looked at a variety of different still lifes and discussed what types of objects are commonly found in a still life. Students practiced drawing from a still life setup from observation. Then, students learned about shadows and highlights and "blending" and "bumping" techniques with oil pastels to make their still life objects look more 3-D.
The first challenge was to create a name design using block letters. Students filled the space of the letters with a variety of interesting designs. Students chose either a warm or cool color scheme in the space around the letters to contrast with the black and white lettering.
3rd Graders were introduced to art class the first day with the book, Art Is, by Bob Raczka.
